Sho Dozono has been in the travel industry for over 30 years, and since 1987 has served as president and CEO of Azumano Travel in Portland, Oregon. In 2001, he became the first minority to chair the Portland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce in its 110-year history. In 2002 he was named Travel Agent of the Year by the American Society of Travel Agents. A strong advocate of diversity and equal opportunity, Dozono is a respected business and civic leader and devotes much of his time to civil and individual rights. Highlights of his professional career include the following: Trustee, Portland Art Museum 1992-98 and 1999-2005; PSU Foundation 1998-2005; President, Portland Schools Foundation 1998-02; Olympic Torchbearer 2002; Port of Portland Commissioner 1989-93; United Way Campaign Chair 2004 (raised $16 M); Member, Portland Multnomah Progress Board (since 1993); President, Japan America Society of Oregon 1993-95; President, Japanese American Citizens League 1979-80; Co-chair of the Oregon League of Minority Voters (since 2008), and newly appointed Board Member of the US-Japan Council.
Over the years, Dozono has been the recipient of numerous awards including the 1997 William S. Naito award for outstanding service, presented by the Portland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. In 2002, Dozono received the
US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce (USPACC) Award of Excellence in Community Service for “his hard work, perseverance and contributions to the American way of life. ”In 2004, the Volunteers of America Oregon honored Dozono with the DePreist Award for Excellence, created to recognize individuals who “exceed expectations and whose leadership has helped to build our community, leaving a legacy for our city.” In 2005, he received the Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Oregon Chapter, and; the Angel Award for his work in connection with the Cascade AIDS Project. In 2006, he received the Torchbearer Award presented by the Equity Foundation in recognition of his “profound commitment to building a strong and diverse Oregon.” In 2008, he received the Drum Major Award for “Living the Dream” in the spirit of “Drum Major Martin Luther King, Jr.
A third-generation Japanese American, Dozono was born in Japan. At the age of ten, he emigrated to the United States with his family. Sho and his wife, Loen have been married for 39 years and have raised five children.
